Thanks so much for reading Body Type this year. I’ve been publishing since November 2021, check out the full archive!
In 2023 I’ll be offering paid subscriber-only posts that are more “how-to” in nature: How to get into lifting at home, how to approach eating when you’re pressed for time, that kind of thing. I’ll always have free content here, but if you want access to all my work or just support my writing, please upgrade to a paid subscription.
Get a discounted annual subscription if you purchase one for you and a friend (or a few friends):
You can always upgrade just yourself by following the steps here, or gift a subscription to someone else for just a month:
I’m also uplifting a holiday fundraising effort, should you be so inclined. I’m hoping to raise $1,000 for GiveDirectly. From this Vox piece:
We’ve given to them partly because there's a large body of research on the benefits of cash transfers, which we find quite compelling.
We've been profoundly lucky to never experience the kind of extreme poverty that billions of people worldwide have to endure. We have no idea what we would spend a cash transfer from GiveDirectly on if we were living on less than $2 a day in Uganda. Would we buy a bednet? Maybe! Or maybe we'd buy an iron roof. Or school tuition for loved ones. Or cattle.
But you know who does have a good sense of the needs of poor people in Uganda? Poor people in Uganda. They have a very good idea of what they need. Do they sometimes misjudge their spending priorities? Certainly; as do all of us. And bednets appear to be underpurchased relative to the actual need for them. But generally, you should only give something other than cash if you are confident you know the recipients’ needs better than they do. We weren’t confident of that, so we gave cash.
I’ve donated $100 to kick things off. Thank you for whatever you can give. Here’s my fundraiser page:
Thank you so much for being here! Enjoy the rest of of your 2022.
