Mikala I am teary reading this. Your questions are so good, this interview is so good, I am just really in awe of you. Currently sending this to all my friends.
Thank you! Casey has also published a weight lifting guide called Liftoff, so I'd def recommend that: couchtobarbell.com/
Starting Strength remains the gold standard, so I'd check that out, too.
I do have to say, if you can steel yourself against some of the dumb "lady marketing" language, I do think Thinner, Leaner, Stronger holds up. It's essentially a copy-paste of the "guy" version (Bigger, Leaner, Stronger) and the principles are legit. I just don't recommend it in case anyone would feel bothered by the "beach bod babe" stuff.
And if you are at all interested in the topic (not to assume that you are!) I have to mention Ben Carpenter's book on fat loss. He knows his shit and all his content is gentle, non-judgemental, and aimed at helping people move away from dumb, shitty diets. If anyone *does* want to cut body fat, I seriously think his book is a harm-reduction resource in the realm of terrible diet-culture content. He's legit one of the most positive and helpful voices in the space, imo.
Excellent interview. I had weight loss surgery in March and am now realising how important muscle is. My muscles have been depleting while trying to recover from surgery and I'm starting to realise how much focus I need to put into strengthening them so I can be stronger, fitter and healthier.
